San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) to salar de Uyuni
REFERENCE PROGRAM
This program is designed for travelers who wish to visit the salar de Uyuni and lagoons, starting in San Pedro de Atacama and finishing in Uyuni.
Salar Tour 3D/2N San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) to Uyuni (Bolivia) visiting the Uyuni salt flats and lagoons.
Day 1 COLORED LAGOONS AND DESERTS (San Pedro de Atacama – Ojo de Perdiz) Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve (L, D)
We will pick you up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, and drive you to the Bolivian border at Hito Cajones. After crossing the border and upon arrival in Bolivia, you will enjoy a remarkable landscape dominated by the Licancabur volcano, with one of the jewels of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve (REA) at its foot: the Green Lagoon. This will be the starting point of our trip in a 4X4. This place is truly unique in the world.
Once we leave the Green Lagoon behind, we will enter a vast landscape: the Valley of the Ladies desert. We will continue to the hot springs of Polques, where we will enjoy a bath before heading to the Geysers of Sol de Mañana, where we can observe volcanic activity.
Afterwards, we will arrive at the Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada), another precious jewel of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve. This lagoon is the most important site in the area and is known for its three different species of flamingos. The red color of the lagoon is produced by active algae that react with solar radiation and wind. The pink color of the flamingos’ feet and feathers is also produced by the same algae, which is their main source of food.
These deserts display a great variety of colors, including red, orange, ochre, brass, brown, and beige. We will visit the Stone Tree, and along the way we will encounter wild vicuñas with their fine and elegant figures.
We will continue towards Ojo de Perdiz, where we will spend the night at the Tayka Desert Hotel (4,500 meters).
Day 2 LAGOONS, THE BIG SALAR (Ojo de Perdiz – Colchani) (B, L, D)
We will depart from Ojo de Perdiz, an area known for its wide expanses of colored deserts with no real roads. The colors of the sand and rocks are the result of millennial winds combined with the presence of borax and sulfur, creating changing tones of brown, red, orange, brass, and beige along the route.
We will then drive along the high-altitude lagoons of Ramadita, Honda, Chiarkota, Hedionda, and Cañapa, where we will see a large number of flamingos from three different species: Andean, James, and Chilean. The flamingos share this environment with other bird species such as Andean seagulls and wild ducks. These lagoons are surrounded by volcanoes with eternal snow on their summits and green slopes covered with native vegetation such as paja brava, yareta, and thola.
We will have lunch on the shore alongside one of the lagoons before continuing.
Afterwards, we will continue towards San Cristóbal village, located near the mine of the same name, one of Bolivia’s largest mining facilities. Years ago, the entire village was relocated by the mining company to a new site 14 km away from its original location after large quantities of minerals were discovered in the area.
Finally, weather permitting, we will enjoy a sunset at the Salar de Uyuni. Overnight stay will be at one of the salt hotels (Luna Salada or Palacio de Sal) in Colchani, located on the edge of the salar.
Day 3 MORE OF THE BIG SALAR (COLCHANI – UYUNI) (L, D)
Today, we will continue across the impressive white, salty landscape of the Salar de Uyuni.
After visiting the salt museum, we will head to Incahuasi Island , located in the heart of the salar. This site is one of the region’s most iconic attractions. From the top of the island, we will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the vast salt flats.
Our final stop will be the train graveyard, where old, rusted steel steam locomotives dating back to 1890 stand as silent witnesses of the past. We will end the trip in Uyuni or return to Colchani.
IMPORTANT! Due to weather and road conditions the routes and hotel reservations can sometimes be changed without notice. This is the reason why the itinerary is only for reference, and is not to be taken as an exact itinerary of what this tour implies. Rain, snow, ice and strong winds for example can cause some parts of the route to temporarily become impassable and may oblige us to make changes in the itinerary. But take notice that if we have to make changes it is for your own safety. The surroundings of Uyuni are one of most isolated areas in the world. Please note that this trip is +/- 1000 Kms of driving over unpaved roads at high altitude, where medical assistance may be far away. Everyone responds differently to altitude; however, we strongly recommend allowing your body enough time to acclimatize to the high altitude. This is why we do not recommend to travel from sea level directly to Uyuni to do this trip, without spending a couple of days acclimating to a high elevation before beginning your tour.
To help you fully enjoy your experience, we recommend taking medication for altitude sickness, such as Diamox or similar tablets. You can find more details in our blog entry about traveling at high altitude. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor.
RAINY SEASON: the rainy season is roughly from January to April (subject to change). During this period parts of the Salar may be covered with water. This means that even though it will still be possible to do the trip and to visit the Salar with its beautiful lagoons, as well as the highlights of the trip, the water on the Salar may prevent us from being able to cross it for several hours like you would do during the dry season. You will therefore not be able to get to Isla Incahuasi / Fish Island. When the Salar is covered with a little bit of water it also becomes one big mirror which is a beautiful setting for pictures. Many photographers even specifically visit the Salar during this rainy season in order to capture beautiful pictures. With too much water however the mirror-effect is gone. Needless to say we cannot predict whether or not it will rain before or during your trip, it’s up to Mother Nature.
